Big Level is a prominent elevation in the Lewis Hills of western Newfoundland. The route to Big Level is remarkable for spectacular scenery. At 2474 feet above sea level, it commands an inspiring view of the surrounding countryside. Wildlife sightings are common. Caribou graze on and around the summit, rock ptarmigan nest among the tuckamore and arctic hare have been known to live here.
It is a wilderness area in every respect. There are no developed trails. The hillsides are crisscrossed by caribou trails and have been used for centuries, deeply etched into the landscape.
This route is a one-day ( 10 - 12 hours) hike, covering 14 kilometers of wilderness, 1274 feet elevation gain, 2474 above sea level. 28 kilometers over forest access road, no marked trails, moderate to difficult terrain, for expert map and compass navigators, experienced hikers.
